Classic Opto-Compressor

The Carl Martin Classic Opto-Compressor is an old-school optical compressor pedal that delivers vintage tone coloring and dynamic control, from transparent sustain to total squeeze compression.
  • Premium Optical Compression Technology - Utilizes authentic opto-compression circuitry where a light source controls gain reduction via a photo-sensitive cell, delivering the classic vintage compression sound with natural tone coloring that defined studio recordings of the past
  • Highly Interactive Four-Knob Control - Gain controls the 'pre-glow' of the optical circuit for fat tone, Compression adjusts from soft to hard squeeze (12:1 ratio), Attack ranges from fast transparent limiting (1ms) to slow effect-like compression (15ms) perfect for fingerpicking, and Level provides output matching or boost up to +12dB
  • Versatile Dynamic Range - Capable of everything from mild, transparent sustain enhancement to extreme hard compression and beefed-up tone, making it suitable for rhythm playing, singing lead lines that cut through the mix, or achieving classic compressed guitar sounds
  • Boost/Sustain Functionality - Level control extends beyond unity gain, allowing the pedal to function as a clean boost with added sustain, perfect for making lead lines project to the audience while maintaining tonal integrity
  • Professional Studio-Quality Performance - Delivers the warmth and character of vintage studio compressors in a compact pedal format with 60dB signal-to-noise ratio and 200ms release time, housed in a robust diecast enclosure with classic chicken-head knobs

All about Carl Martin Classic Opto-Compressor

The Carl Martin Classic Opto-Compressor brings professional studio-grade optical compression to your pedalboard in a vintage-inspired package. Born from Carl Martin's studio experience and his desire to create a compact opto-compressor specifically for guitarists, this pedal employs authentic optical compression technology where dynamic control is achieved through a light source interacting with a photo-sensitive cell—the same principle used in classic studio compressors renowned for their musical tone coloring.

This is an old-school compressor from an era when adding character and warmth to the signal was considered essential to great tone. The optical circuit's unique response provides smooth, natural compression that enhances sustain and evens out dynamics without the harshness often associated with modern compressors.

The four interactive controls offer extensive tonal possibilities: The Gain knob controls how much signal loads the optical circuit—the more gain, the fatter the sound and the more effective the compression becomes. The Compression knob determines the intensity, from nearly transparent at minimum to extreme hard compression (12:1 ratio) at maximum. The Attack control is particularly versatile, offering fast attack times (1ms) for transparent, limiter-like compression, or slower settings (up to 15ms) for more pronounced, effect-like compression ideal for fingerpicking styles. Finally, the Level knob allows you to match your bypassed signal or boost it by several dB, effectively turning the pedal into a boost/sustain unit perfect for cutting lead tones.

The beauty of the Classic Opto-Compressor lies in how all four controls interact with each other. Adjusting one parameter affects the behavior of the others, allowing you to dial in everything from subtle dynamic smoothing to total squeeze compression that brings out every harmonic. This interactivity makes it possible to achieve those elusive classic guitar tones—from country chicken-picking clarity to thick, sustained blues leads.

Built in Carl Martin's signature diecast housing with distinctive chicken-head knobs and retro styling, the Classic Opto-Compressor delivers professional studio compression in a road-worthy pedal. It can be powered by a 9V battery (accessible via the bottom panel), though a regulated power supply is highly recommended for optimal performance due to the nature of compression circuitry. Whether you're looking to add vintage warmth, achieve singing sustain, or simply control your dynamics with musical grace, the Classic Opto-Compressor delivers authentic optical compression that colors your tone in all the right ways.
